  • Flail

    Flail Mowing

We offer flail mowing with our heavy duty Teagle flail which is suited to mulch grass, scrubs/brambles, tree saplings and is ideal for the monthly cuts/annual cuts of grassland or even the neglected paddock. Our flail leaves a fine mulch which is then distributed evenly over the ground and decomposes back into the soil which returns nutrients to the soil, which helps improve soil health, encourages new growth, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers.

  • Hedge Cutting

    Hedge Cutting

Trimming back field boundaries and undergrowth is a crucial part of your annual maintenance and maximises your area of land. Not only to look aesthetically pleasing but acts as a shelter for your livestock from the elements. Keeping your hedgerows thick and healthy, serve as a natural barrier that limits direct animal contact and helps prevent the spread of diseases. Hedgerows are crucial habitats providing food (flowers, berries, insects), shelter, and nesting sites for a wide variety of wildlife and serve as "wildlife corridors," allowing wildlife to move safely between otherwise isolated habitats.

  • Spraying (Weed management)

    Spraying (Weed Management)

We offer spraying with our 8m 1000L boom sprayer, to help improve the quality of the grassland for livestock grazing. Weeds such as docks, thistles, nettles, buttercups, and ragwort compete with desirable grass for nutrients, water, and light, which reduces the grazing area and overall quality of your grass sward.

We also offer knapsack spraying for more targeted applications.
Our team is PA1/2/6 qualified, ensuring professional and safe operation. Additionally, we now utilize GPS technology to ensure the most accurate coverage possible.

  • Chain

    Heavy Chain Harrowing & Rolling

Harrowing is important for paddock care, especially after a wet winter with livestock damage. It helps level molehills, mix in manure, and improves air and water flow in the soil. This boosts grass growth by clearing old dead grass and giving new shoots space and oxygen. Harrowing also lowers disease by exposing harmful fungi and bacteria to sunlight. It can uproot or bury shallow weeds, cutting their competition for water and nutrients and may reduce the need for herbicides.

After harrowing we recommend flat rolling your grassland to help to push any stones back into the ground which were lifted by the harrow, the compression from the roller encourages the grass crowns to spread out and "tiller" (produce side shoots), which results in a thicker, denser sward.

  • slitting

    Aerating (Slitting)

Grassland becomes compacted over time from livestock and machinery sealing the surface restricting air, water, and nutrients to the soil, that’s where the slitter comes into play and breaks the top layer of shallow compaction. Our slitter perforates the top 150 mm of the soil giving a shattering effect to the top soil structure and allowing the ground to breath and allows the roots to grow deeper which results in a stronger sward. The best times to aerate are early in the season and after flat rolling.

  • A tractor with a grass seeder attachment in a grassy field.

Reseeding: grass, flowers and conservation crops

HG contracting can sow or reseed grassland, conservation crops and wild flower meadows. Reseeding or direct drilling into established pastures is a more economical method than complete re-establishment for reviving tired or patchy areas.

Direct or Slot seeding adds vigour without destroying the good grass already there. Our specialist direct drill ensures seed-to-soil contact for strong, even growth and preserves moisture. With minimal Soil Disturbance it is perfect for autumn or spring improvement of horse paddocks.

Alternatively total re-establishment if offered where landowners want to change land use from, say, pasture to wild flowers meadow or, say arable crops to conservation cropping, such as wild bird food or pollen and nectar mixes.
